English Weather, News, Ski Report - March 21, 2024

20032024-p2933788

WEATHER

It is a damp, drizzly day in the village, though hopefully snowing higher up.
The clouds are low, and may limit your visibility.
It is still warm for this time of the year, and it didn't freeze in the village overnight.
At 9.50 the temperature is

  • +5° in the Village.
  • +3° on Solaise.
  • +1° on Bellevarde
  • -3° on Pisaillas

Wind is gusting at up to 80 km/hour on Pisaillas.

ROADS

No problems are expected on our roads today.

SKI REPORT

Most pistes and lifts are open, but later today the wind may affect lifts.
In particular , the Cascade Chairlift on the Pisaillas and the Vallon bubble.

The few closures  are :

  • Tunnel piste in Le Fornet.
  • There is racing on the Joseray and the Raye
  • The Boarder Cross is hosting an Altigliss event
  • The Snow Park should open soon if visibility allows
  • Moutons can’t open as
  • Mont Blanc Chairlift is still not working
The large spare part has arrived but has to sit in a big freezer for 2 days……….
  • The L is closed due to the high risk of yet another avalanche crashing down it.
  • The Santons will close by lunchtime for the same reason.
Don’t be ‘reassured’ by recent avalanche activity as there are still plenty of slabs waiting to go.
Never risk skiing down a closed run.

The following were not groomed :

AT LE FORNET

  • Fôret
  • Col
  • Table d'Orientation

ON SOLAISE

  • Combe Martin
  • La Fourche
  • Ecureil touring track (no suprise as never groomed!).

ON BELLEVARDE

  • Epaule du Charvet
  • Brinzei touring track (this should be groomed again this evening)

If you fancy a challenge, what about trying the 3000 on Solaise.
It is not every winter that we have the conditions to keep this tricky draglift and steep black run open for so long

Tignes can be accessed via the Tommeuses or Borsat chairlifts.

The avalanche risk today is again 2 out of 5.
but with a  poor refreeze, warm weather and wind, be super cautious.

IF you fancy skiing off piste,
Why not book to ski with, and learn from a mountain guide.

Remember that even on cloudy days you can get badly burnt, so protect your face, don’t forget your suncream.
And while we are being kind to ourselves -
the best snow is on the upper slopes but we have comfy lifts
to avoid the trickier lower slopes when your legs are tired.

All our walking paths and cross county tracks are open apart from

  • Les Branges
  • Col de L’Iseran (As wind may close the Vallon Bubble which takes you down after your walk)
  • The path in the Manchet may close later if threatened by an avalanche.

LOCAL NEWS

We have sad news to share - Firmin Mattis died yesterday morning at the age of 94.
Tomorrow we will tell you about his interesting life.

Onto much happier news – Huge congratulations to Magali Delalex
who has been a Sommelier of the 5 star Hotel, Barmes de L’Ours since 2015.
On Monday evening the prestigious Michelin Guide awarded her « Somelier of the Year ».
Well deserved recognition for her dedicated research and particular interest in local Savoyarde wines,
reflected in the length and breath of their wine list.
Mini health warning, however good they are, wine should be consumed in moderation.
Sure Magali would agree with « Quality over quantity » !

We are also really pleased to share that Benoit Vidal was awarded two Michelin Stars
for his new restaurant in Annecy
even though this only opened at the end of November.
The 2 stars he was previously awarded, had to stay in Le Fornet when he moved on.
He is sorely missed by his many fans in Val.

Poet's Spring continues this evening when you can go the the Multimedia Library at 17.30
to meet the author Bérengère Delaporte  who is presenting his recent book
« Grande Echappé » which was adapted from Rainer Maria Rilke's poem  'The Panther'.
It is a graphic novel, so combines text and images, similar to a comic but the whole story begins and ends within the book.

This winter's last cross country ski relay race took place yesterday evening.
It is rare that this race can take place in the village so late in the season,
but the lower snow level failed to dampen the enthusiasm of either the 9 teams
or the crowd cheering them on.
Two firemen, Cédric et Evan burnt 21 laps in the 20 minutes to secure their place on the top of the podium.

Today's Events

20.30
