20 Years of Youth Alpine Skiing

To celebrate its 20th anniversary, the Youth Alpine Skiing Program will be celebrated this morning in Val d'Isère with 130 middle school students from the Saint-Exupéry school complex in Bourg-Saint-Maurice. The event will take place at a bar-restaurant in La Daille at 8:45 a.m. with local stakeholders from the resort, as well as Hervé Gaymard, President of the Savoie Departmental Council, Christian Grange, Vice-President for Sports, and Nathalie Schmitt, Vice-President for Youth and Middle Schools. Following the speeches, the students will enjoy the slopes of the ski area. For 20 years, the Departmental Council and its partners have been bringing generations of middle school students to the ski slopes of Savoie. Every winter, 8,000 middle school students in grades 7 and 8 put on their skis for 10 hours of alpine and Nordic skiing during school hours as part of their physical education curriculum. The goal is twofold: to introduce young people from the Savoie region to skiing while also helping them discover the mountain environment, environmental issues, and careers related to the mountains. For this anniversary season, 29 participating middle schools are taking part in the alpine component at 24 partner resorts, and 43 schools are participating in the Nordic component at 13 sites associated with the event. Since the start of this initiative, 53,000 middle school students have benefited from this youth alpine skiing program.
