Bar Safety
Following the tragedy in a bar in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, the gendarmerie, the municipal police, the mayor, and other elected officials convened a meeting of the village's nightlife establishments to discuss safety. Seventeen representatives attended the meeting, which took place Tuesday afternoon. The Major wanted to meet with the business owners to reiterate the rules of good conduct, their rights and responsibilities, and to find solutions to the various problems they face. This meeting was convened in particular due to an excessive number of customers who have been aggressive and disrespectful towards law enforcement since the beginning of the season. The Ministry also sent a telegram following the Crans-Montana tragedy. This telegram contained a list of rules and standards, including a request for increased safety and fire regulations to reinforce inspections in nightlife venues. The gendarmerie also reminded the business owners that they are responsible for their customers in the vicinity of their establishments, that they have the right to refuse service to intoxicated individuals, that they must ensure safety and mutual support, and that they must protect their establishments. Law enforcement and the local council also reminded businesses to respect closing times or risk administrative closure. As a reminder, bars must close no later than 2:00 AM. One establishment was already forced to close on New Year's Eve, a day without mandatory closing times, due to a disturbance at 7:00 AM after three police interventions. Several issues were raised by professionals, including intoxicated individuals, the laxity of regulations since the COVID-19 pandemic, the safety commission and capacity limits, and the legal ambiguity surrounding the different categories of establishments, which are not always aligned with their activities. Regarding this last point, the gendarmerie emphasized that no establishment in Val d'Isère, apart from the two nightclubs, is categorized as a dance floor and therefore is not legally permitted to operate one. Several proposals were suggested, including a request for stricter regulations and oversight, verification of emergency exits, training on fire extinguisher use, preventative inspections, mobile security personnel, and the use of escort shuttles, which are already available at some establishments. Security checks of establishments will begin today and continue throughout the winter. Each representative will receive a document outlining the regulations to follow based on their classification. The issue of drugs was also raised. The gendarmerie noted that seizures generally amount to between €15,000 and €40,000. In 2025, 90 driver's licenses were revoked for drug use. Checks have been stepped up in the village, on the roads, and even on the ski slopes to combat this scourge. Nationally, the Albertville area, which includes Val d'Isère, ranks 9th in the number of recorded crimes and offenses.
Avaline Trax
Due to heavy snowfall and wind gusts of up to 60 km/h, the Ski Lift Authority and the Sports Club decided yesterday morning to cancel the Avaline Trax, which was scheduled to take place yesterday afternoon in La Daille. It will be rescheduled for a later date.
British Army
Nearly 300 British Infantry soldiers were in Val d'Isère and Tignes this week for a week of alpine skiing competitions (see photo). Half of them, the most inexperienced, skied in the Tignes area, while the intermediate skiers enjoyed the slopes of Val d'Isère. Around fifty of them were putting on skis for the first time and experiencing the thrill of competitive skiing for the first time. The various infantry regiments participated individually and as a team in the Giant Slalom, Super-G, Downhill, Slalom, and Super Combined. This marked the 40th anniversary of the partnership between the British Army and Val d'Isère, as Colonel Rupert Kitching, President of the British Alpine Infantry explained.
The British Infantry fully intends to continue coming to Val d'Isère for the next forty years.
