Victim on the ski slopes

The ski patrol responded Monday evening to a disappearance on the slopes. The man, originally from Turkey, was last seen in the Grand Pré area at noon. Ski patrollers were alerted late in the afternoon around 5 p.m. by his wife and set out to patrol the off-piste area of Charvet to find him. Teams from the High Mountain Gendarmerie Platoon (PGHM) of Bourg-Saint-Maurice and Modane also joined the search by helicopter, along with a drone pilot from Moûtiers. After a lengthy search throughout the evening, the victim was found deceased at 1 a.m. by the drone's thermal imaging camera. The snowboarder, who was not equipped with an avalanche transceiver, was found at the foot of a rocky cliff on the Charvet loop, at the bottom of the Manchet Valley.

A tribute will be paid to Gérard Mattis, a great and emblematic figure of Val d'Isère, who passed away last January. A torchlight descent will be organized this evening at 7:30 p.m. on the Bellevarde Face. Around one hundred people, including family and friends, are expected from 5:15 p.m. at the bottom of the Bellevarde Express chairlift. Participants will be welcomed at the mountain restaurant to wait for sunset before descending the Face. The memorial in tribute to Gérard Mattis is also open to participants of the Mattis Ski Schools and young people with a silver-level competition experience. Those unable to participate in the torchlight descent can welcome friends and family at the bottom of the Bellevarde Face.

Pom-pom Operations

The public was made aware of slope safety thanks to the yellow pom-pom operation that took place yesterday (see photo). The yellow pom-poms, visible both on the slopes and at the base of the slopes, piqued the curiosity of skiers and snowboarders and sparked discussions about slope safety. At the base of the slopes, an awareness booth was staffed by ski patrollers and the Val d'Isère gendarmerie. Skiers were able to take a quiz of about ten questions to assess their knowledge of slope safety rules, and also to talk with professionals about safety on the ski area and the proper behavior to adopt.

Every Tuesday, all ski resort and safety personnel will wear their yellow pom-poms, the symbol of the safety ambassadors on the slopes.

Yesterday morning, more than 350 people experienced the thrill of Super-G during a race organized by the ski patrol on the Borsat slope.
