Local News
Snow
Heavy snowfall has impacted roads and the ski area. The department has been under a yellow alert for snow and ice, wind, heavy rain and flooding, and avalanches since Thursday. Road conditions were difficult yesterday between Bourg-Saint-Maurice and Val d'Isère, particularly near the Brévières waste disposal site. The gendarmerie was present from 7:00 AM to check snow chains, notably by activating the chain-fitting area at Champet, in the Sainte-Foy and La Raie sectors. The Prefect of Savoie reminds everyone that winter equipment, namely winter tires, chains, or snow socks, is mandatory until March 31st, and urges extra caution on the roads. A snow removal operation was carried out on the ascent to Tignes yesterday at 6:30 PM, consequently blocking the road between Tignes Les Boisses and Tignes le Lac. Heavy goods vehicles over 7.5 tonnes are prohibited from traveling uphill from Albertville. This measure has been in effect since 10 p.m. yesterday and will end this evening at the same time. Normal regulations will then apply, with a ban on heavy goods vehicles from 10 p.m. to 10 p.m. tomorrow. A few reminders for your safety: only travel if your vehicle is equipped with snow chains, reduce your speed and increase following distances, give way to snow removal vehicles and do not overtake them, and if you need snow chains, use only the designated areas to avoid disrupting traffic. Regarding the slopes, a PIDA (Preventive Accident and Disaster Management Plan) was carried out yesterday and again at dawn today by the Ski Patrol to secure the ski area. The Solaise sector has been closed due to wind, as well as the Tignes-Val d'Isère link and other slopes. Strong wind gusts of up to 80 km/h are expected, with approximately one meter of snowfall forecast by Météo France today.
Traffic
For this new holiday weekend, traffic will be lighter than previous weekends. Today, traffic will be disrupted between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. for those arriving, while congestion is expected in the morning, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., for those returning. Tomorrow, the roads will be clear with no difficulties anticipated except in the event of unforeseen circumstances. This weekend, 50,000 vehicles are expected heading north in the Haute-Tarentaise region, compared to 62,000 heading south.
Census
From Thursday until February 14, census takers will visit your home to conduct the population census. These census takers are officially mandated by the municipality and can be identified by their census taker ID card signed by the mayor. It is important to remember that the census is a mandatory civic duty. It allows the municipality to receive a financial allocation from the state, called the General Operating Grant. This grant is essential for funding the municipality's development: public facilities, childcare, transportation, cultural and sports facilities, classrooms in schools, medical practices, pharmacies, etc. All dwellings, including primary and secondary residences, as well as other types of housing, will be surveyed. Those concerned will have to complete a housing questionnaire, followed by an individual questionnaire for each resident, focusing on topics such as employment and modes of transportation used. When the census taker visits, they will be given an online information sheet with personal login details to complete the census on the website "le-recensement-et-moi.fr". For those less comfortable using computers, paper questionnaires are also available.
Olympic Ceremony
With less than a month to go before the Milan-Cortina 2026 Olympic Games, the French National Olympic and Sports Committee and the French Paralympic and Sports Committee have unveiled the athletes nominated to be flag bearers. Among the seven candidates for the French Olympic team are two representatives from the Val d'Isère Sports Club: Clément Noël and Victor Muffat-Jeandet. Selection criteria are based on recognizing an outstanding sporting career and exemplary commitment. Candidates must have already participated in the Games, embody Olympic and Paralympic values, meet strict integrity criteria, and have never served as a flag bearer. They will be elected by their peers: the athletes selected for the Games will be the voters. We will officially know on January 30th whether Clément Noël or Victor Muffat-Jeandet will proudly carry the French flag at the Olympic Games opening ceremony on February 6th in Milan.
