Local News

Avalanches
Yesterday morning, a woman in her thirties, accompanied by a professional and equipped with an avalanche transceiver, was caught and buried in an avalanche in the off-piste area of Le Fornet, above the Pont Saint-Charles. The alert was raised at 11:14 a.m. at the ski patrol headquarters. The woman was swept nearly 800 meters down a 550-meter vertical drop and remained buried for almost 5 minutes. The victim was freed at 11:20 a.m. by the group, just as the first ski patroller arrived on the scene. With the help of colleagues who arrived a few minutes later, they administered first aid. Alerted simultaneously, a helicopter crew from the Courchevel base responded very quickly. The victim has resumed breathing and is conscious. She suffered a back injury and was evacuated to the hospital in Bourg-Saint-Maurice. In recent days, the strong easterly winds have created numerous areas with very sensitive winds. As a result, the avalanche risk was raised to level 3 on the ski area. While the effectiveness of the rescue services has once again proven itself, the Ski Patrol recommends extreme caution when skiing off-piste, as conditions can vary even within the same area. A second avalanche, on an adjacent slope, was reported in the afternoon, with several people swept away, but without serious consequences.

Visitor Numbers
This last week of the year will be the busiest in terms of visitor numbers in our village. The New Year's week is approaching 95% occupancy, with a rate of 94.9% and 109,300 overnight stays. The Tourism Office reminds holidaymakers to be vigilant against accommodation scams during this festive period.

Road Traffic
This weekend will be the third busiest in terms of traffic in the Tarentaise Valley, with 34,000 vehicles expected today heading north. Traffic will therefore be heavily disrupted for arrivals from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., as well as for departures. On Sunday, traffic will be smooth for both departures and arrivals. In total, 75,000 vehicles are expected this weekend in the Tarentaise Valley heading north and 68,000 heading south. To limit the high volume of visitors, the Tourist Office encourages accommodation providers to rent from Sunday to Sunday. The Tarentaise-Vanoise region also contacted Val d'Isère on this subject through a survey conducted by students specializing in land-use planning.
