English Weather, News, Ski Report - April 9, 2024

04042024-dji-0108

Weather

It's quite a dreary day out there, with ongoing precipitation across the region. The snow-rain limit will fluctuate between 2000m and 1300m, and up to 25 cm of fresh snow is expected around 2500m. The strong Southerly wind continues to blow across the mountains this morning, but is expected to drop off.
As for temperatures, at 9 o'clock we have 5°C in the village, -0.5°C at the top of Bellevarde, and -3°C at Pisaillas. Thankfully temperatures will be cooler today, expecting a top of 1°C at 2000m.

Roads

Despite the rain, no difficulties are expected for vehicles travelling on the local roads today. Conditions may change as the snow-rain limit descends.

Ski Report

As we head into spring, some runs will close throughout the day due to rising avalanche danger with the current weather conditions. As of 9 a.m. the following is correct:

The Pisaillas and Fornet sectors will be opening to the public today, all lifts and runs are expected to open. The Combe du Geant may close due to avalanche danger.

Over on Solaise, all lifts will open on time this morning, however the Piste L and Mattis will not open today due to avalanche danger, and the Marmottons is now closed at the bottom. The Aiglons may close throughout the day. Everything will be open on the snowfront today including the tobogganing area.

In the Bellevarde sector, the majority of the terrain will be open today apart from the Santons and the two Border Crosses. Portions of the OK and Orange, and Criterium runs will be reserved for racing today, and will reopen to the public afterwards. Skiing in Tignes can be accessed via the Tommeuse or Borsat lifts.

Cross Country skiers and Pedestrians can head out to any of our trails today, apart from the Branges, Marmottes and Col d'Iseran. Portions of the Manchet Valley trail network may close due to Avalanche Danger.

The avalanche risk is 3/5 today. Always ski with a partner, have the appropriate gear and know how to use it, and if in doubt hire a guide.

Local News

15 elected officials attended the April Municipal Council yesterday morning. A meeting lasting almost two hours, with 18 items on the agenda. Several of these points sparked lengthy debates, such as membership in the National Association of Mountain Resort Mayors (ANMSM), ski lift prices for the end of the season, or even the upcoming Alpine Park event. During question time, housing for the local community was discussed.
Due to the dense subject matter an exhaustive report has not yet been published. A recap in English will be published in tomorrow's local news.

70 people attended the public meeting last night concerning the summer and off-season construction sites. In the introduction, Patrick Martin recalled the difficulty of anticipating the opening of a construction site which remains the decision of the “private person” concerned. The list of different projects, both public and private, anticipated in the coming months was then listed. In total, 26 major projects were presented, some having an impact on traffic, or on summer tourist activities.
On the public side, the coming months should see the birth of the Daille bus station project, including the demolition of the current cabin (up until now the car garage), with a modern wooden-clad building to replace it. The cost of this project, the building plus the creation of platforms for buses, is estimated at €1,175,000.
The centre of the village will be especially impacted by several major projects. Demolition is scheduled in the heart of Olympic Avenue, as well as that of the Christiania hotel. This will have a major impact on traffic, particularly at the current bus station, where two traffic plans are being studied, either an alternating one way traffic or a detour.
Another district, the Fornet, will see the demolition and reconstruction of a chalet in the heart of the hamlet, a project which will have a strong impact, and will prevent the organisation of the Fornet festival this summer.
Construction in the Legettaz and Joseray will once again cause issues on the access road to the Manchet. The pedestrian and mountain bike path on the other side of the Calabourdane river will also be affected, although less than last summer, as there will be more interior development.
Construction sites will also be present on the outskirts of the village, as work begins on the Vallon cable car. The Fornet Iseran sector of the ski area will be closed from April 21st, the summer road will be clear waiting for the the arrival of the cable car on May 6th, but traffic will be reserved for construction vehicles. However, a shuttle will run up to the Pont St Charles car park, up until the official end of the season. Snow removal will then continue, providing access to the top of the Col d'Iseran by the end of May. This schedule is subject to weather conditions, avalanche danger, and the approval of the snow removal specialist.
On the other side of town, on the RD902, work will resume, after a calm summer of 2023. The department will carry out repairs in the Saut tunnel, downhill from the Villaret du Nial. Alternating traffic will be put in place from the end of June, up until the end of November. Occasional night closures will also be included, but the department is seeking to improve communication on these closures and will offer an SMS system to alert people as effectively as possible.

The barriers were lowered yesterday morning on the road at the entrance to the village, blocking traffic. A vehicle had broken down in the tunnel. Fortunately the vehicle was quickly moved along, and traffic was able to flow freely.

Later on today the village seniors are invited to get together at 2:30 p.m. at the Municipal Council room, at the invitation of the CCAS. Today it’s brain gymnastics.
